News | 3 Writers Arrive Ebedi For Writing Residency


Three Nigerian writers, Gbadeyanka Kehinde Yusuff, Dawaki Hamza Sadiq and Nehru Cheovo Odeh have arrived Iseyin, Oyo State, Nigeria for the September-October 2017 session of the Ebedi International Writers Residency.

Yusuff who is a playwright, poet and short story writer is from Oyo State. An up and coming writer with four unpublished works, he hopes to spend his time in Ebedi to complete a drama piece. He will also use the time to mentor Secondary Students in Iseyin in the art of creative writing.


The second writer, Dawaki Hamza Sadiq from Kano State is a teacher and translator who writes in Hausa and English languages. Some of his literary works include two novels, two poetry collections and some newspaper articles. He is also the winner of some literary prizes such as "Gasar Gagara Gwari" from TaskarAla Global Kano, 2012, "Gwarzon Marubuci" from Duniyar Marubuta, Kankia, 2013 as well as "Gudunmawar Adabi" from Makarantar Bambadiya, KASU Kaduna, 2014. Dawaki will be spending his time in Ebedi to interact with seasoned and experienced writers whom he hopes will further enhance his writing skills in completing another collection of Hausa poems. In return, he will teach Iseyin students Hausa language, folklore and drama.

The third writer, Nehru Cheovo Odeh from Delta State is an Ebedi Fellow having previously attended the Ebedi Residency in 2011. An experienced journalist, Nehru has worked in Newspaper organizations such as the Daily Times, TELL magazine and THE NEWS magazine in various capacities. He has published a play, The Patience of an Embattled Storyteller (2014) while his collection of poetry, The Rise of the Superman, is currently in print. Nehru will spending his time in Ebedi on his new novel; Living for a Day. He will also interact with Iseyin students in the areas of Journalism and Drama.

The Ebedi International Literary Writers Residency is a private Initiative for writers to complete ongoing works in a conducive environment at no cost to the writers. Since its inception nine years ago, the Residency has hosted over 100 writers from 10 African countries. Many of the past Residents (Fellows) have used the Residency to produce international award winning books. The latest is Ayobami Adebayo a 2016 Ebedi Fellow whose novel; Stay with Me was recently shortlisted for the 2017 Bailey Women’s Prize for Fiction.
