Writers, Students Mark International Day Of Word In Nigeria




Marking this year’s International Day of Word, Students and writers gathered in Minna, Niger state on Thursday, November 23, to pay tribute to the power of word through reading of poems and flash fiction that promote peace, love and understanding among cultures and religions.

November 23 is being promoted by the Cesar Egido Serrano Foundation, Spain as International Day of Word to celebrate the word as a bond to humankind.

The Nigerian event was organized by the Arts-Muse Fair News Blog, appointed as Ambassador of the Word by the Foundation, in collaboration with the Niger State Book and Other Intellectual Resource Development Agency.  

The Curator of the Art- Muse Fair News Blog, Aminu S Muhammad, said the International Day of Word is an annual global occasion to celebrate the importance of word as a tool for promoting peace, love and understanding amongst humanity.

He observed that use of words have positive and negative effects on the bond of humanity between people. He noted that improper use of words is capable of creating chaos between cultures and religions.
He advised students and other participants to understand the meanings of words before uttering them to avoid misuse.

The Director, Niger State Book and Other Intellectual Resource Development Agency, Alhaji Hussaini Nma Baba, who was represented by the Head, Facility, Nma Hassan said the Agency was determined to partner with relevant institutions in promoting peace and understanding through writing.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Project Manager of Development Initiative for West Africa (DIWA), Muhammad Danjuma Abubakar, advised youths to get active in good causes away from being responsible for the chaos and misunderstanding among various cultures and religions. He described the event as a solid stepping-stone towards building harmonious co-existence in the society.

The event, which featured reading of poems and flash fiction, had participating students drawn from various secondary schools in Minna, Niger State as well as writers and teachers.

Certificates of participation were presented to the participating schools as well as teachers in attendance.
