Applications for participation are invited from adult amateur and professional photographers of any nationality for 2017 Luis ValtueƱa International Humanitarian Photography Competition in Spain. This marks twenty-first year in which Doctors of the World–MĆ©dicos del Mundo (MdM-Spain) has organised the Luis ValtueƱa International Humanitarian Photography competition in honour Luis ValtueƱa, Manuel Madrazo, Flors Sirera and Mercedes Navarro, doctors of the World doctors killed in Rwanda in 1997 and in Bosnia in 1995 when they were working on humanitarian aid projects.   The contest is a reference within the world of photography, which seeks to eulogize humanitarian values and solidarity. The Northern Nigerian Writers Summit (NNWS) has at her third summit held recently in Katsina called on the Northern states  governments to provide concrete support base for the development of indigenous literature through  the teaching of indigenous languages in all primary schools and  publication of books in the indigenous languages of northern Nigeria.    According to the communiquĆ© issued at the end of the summit, the Northern Nigerian Writers Summit will function as an umbrella organization of writers in the north, to strengthen the promotion of literature by incorporating all literary organizations in the nineteen northern states, including Abuja into her fold for a holistic book development project in the region. The three-day gathering also witnessed the appointment of six member interim committee with BM. Dzukogi chairing. News || Nigeria Submits Instruments Of Ratification Of 4 Copyright Treaties To WIPO || The Arts-Muse Fair

Photo: COSON Nigeria has provided instruments of ratification of four copyright treaties to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, reports the  Music in Africa . These instruments of ratification, which refer to letters signed by a head of government concerning a treaty, were delivered to WIPO director-general Francis Gurry at the 57th general assembly of the organisation,  which is the “the central hub for global IP [intellectual property] infrastructure”, on 2 October.  The documents were handed to Gurry by Nigeria’s permanent representative the UN Office at Geneva (UNOG), Audu Kadiri, and the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Afam Ezekude. The handover of the instruments of ratification asserts Nigeria’s agreement to requirements of the treaties. Photo credit: Tony Powell The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery yesterday said that it has commissioned the museum’s official portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, reports the the  ArtDaily .  Artist Kehinde Wiley—best known for his vibrant, large-scale paintings of African Americans—will create the portrait of President Obama. Amy Sherald, first-prize winner of the Portrait Gallery’s 2016 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, has been chosen to paint Mrs. Obama. The two portraits will be unveiled at the museum in early 2018 and will be added to the Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. Over the course of his career, Wiley (b. Los Angeles, 1977), whom President Obama selected, has frequently portrayed young African American men wearing the latest in hip-hop street fashion. Entries are invited from African writers for 2018 Caine Prize for Short Story. The Caine Prize for African Writing is a literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in English. The prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally. The focus on the short story reflects the contemporary development of the African story-telling tradition. Eligibility and Entry Rules: Unpublished work is NOT acceptable for the Caine Prize.
